How to Eat at a Restaurant
Eating at a restaurant can be overwhelming. The portions are often too big and the options are vast. Here are my simple rules for eating at a restaurant that will keep you on track with your goals.
1. Make sure you have an extra plate nearby. You will be creating a new plate with the food you order and either sharing the rest or packing it up to bring home.
2. Decide whether you want to drink alcohol. Ideally you will limit your intake to 1 drink for the evening, 6 oz of wine, tequila or vodka with soda (refer to the alcohol cheat sheet for details).
3. If you are eating by yourself, first look at the appetizers and the side dishes. The goal is to complete your plate with 4-6 oz of lean protein, 2 cups of non-starchy vegetables and ó cup starch (grain or starchy veg). If a main course appeals to you and checks all these boxes order the main. DO NOT ORDER A MAIN DISH AND AN APPETIZER FOR YOURSELF!
4. When sharing, make sure to complete your plate before starting to eat.
5. Don’t be afraid to ask for modifications. Some of my favorites are:
Steam vegetables instead of sauté
No rice with sushi
Substitute bread with crudité for dips
Ask for an extra side of vegetables instead of rice
Request that half the meal be packaged before it is served.
You can always ask if there is a gluten free option
You can always ask for something to be prepared differently
